Kristian Thacker is an artist, educator, and photographer from West Virginia and grew up in the Ohio River Valley. His work follows the toll of natural resource extraction in central Appalachia and its effects on the land and the people who live there. His recent interests are focused on the oil and gas industry’s rise in West Virginia during the 20th century including its return to prominence with the development of the Marcellus and Utica shale formations.
He received his MFA in Intermedia and Photography at West Virginia University and teaches photography as an adjunct lecturer in the WVU School of Art and Design. He currently resides outside of Morgantown, West Virginia, in the northern part of the state.
His work has been featured in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, Barrons, Bloomberg Businessweek, NPR, and the Washington Post among others.
Commercial clients include AARP, Save the Children, FIGS, Edutopia, Accenture among others.
He is a FAA Licensed Drone Pilot (Cert 107).
